Accessibility Statement

We want anyone to be able to use this website, including with a keyboard, a screen reader, a magnifier or reduced motion settings. Here is what we have built, what is not finished, and how to tell us when something is wrong.

What we are aiming for

We build towards the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA. We are telling you what we aim at rather than claiming we have been certified against it, because this site has not been independently audited. If that changes, this page will say so and will say who did the audit.

What is built in

Keyboard operation
Every link, button, menu and form control can be reached and operated with a keyboard alone. The navigation menus open on focus as well as hover, and the contact dialog traps focus while it is open, closes on Escape and returns focus to whatever opened it.
Visible focus
The element you are on is outlined clearly. That outline is never removed without a replacement, because a keyboard user who cannot see where they are cannot use the site at all.

The first thing a keyboard reaches on every page is a link that jumps past the header straight to the main content.
Headings in order
One H1 per page, then H2 and H3 in a logical sequence, so a screen reader user can navigate by heading and get an outline of the page rather than a list of styled text.
Text alternatives
Photographs carry alt text. Decorative images and icons are marked as decorative so a screen reader skips them instead of reading noise.
Touch targets
Buttons, links in button form and form fields are at least 48 pixels tall, which is the size a finger can hit reliably.
Colour and contrast
Body and heading colours are set against their backgrounds for readable contrast, and colour is never the only way information is conveyed.
Reduced motion
If your system is set to reduce motion, animations and smooth scrolling are switched off rather than merely shortened.
No sideways scrolling
Pages never scroll horizontally at any window size. Wide content such as tables scrolls inside its own box instead of pushing the page.
Zoom and reflow
Text scales with your browser or system text size, and layouts reflow rather than clipping or overlapping when you zoom in.
Labelled forms
Every form field has a real label, errors are announced in text rather than only by turning a border red, and the field with the problem is named.
On-site accessibility tools
The accessibility button opens controls for larger text, higher contrast, reduced motion and other adjustments. Your choices are remembered in your own browser and are never sent to us.

What is not done yet

  • This site has not been through an independent accessibility audit. We are describing how it was built, not certifying it.
  • Some photographs carry general alt text describing the type of work shown rather than the specific scene, because we would rather be accurate than descriptive about an image we cannot verify.
  • Translation is provided by a third-party service. We do not control how it announces translated content to a screen reader.
  • If you find something we have missed, telling us is the fastest way it gets fixed. We do not have a way to find every problem on our own.

Using the accessibility tools on this site

The accessibility button sits in the corner of every page. Opening it gives you controls for text size, contrast, link highlighting, motion and related settings. Your choices are saved in your own browser under nacs_ada_settings, they apply as you move around the site, and they can be reset from the same panel at any time. Nothing about those settings is sent to us.

If something does not work

Tell us and we will fix it. Say which page you were on, what you were trying to do and what happened, and if you know what you are using to browse, that helps too. A phone call is completely fine, and often faster.
