A heated building with a loading door has two floors, not one. The strip of slab nearest the opening tracks the outdoor temperature and crosses the freezing point over and over between November and March, while the slab twenty feet further in barely moves. Water sitting in the pores of the cold section expands as it freezes, and the coating over it is asked to stretch and shrink with a substrate that will not stop moving. That is why a commercial floor almost always fails at the door line first, and why that strip gets a different specification from the rest of the room.
